DNS Propagation is the time it takes for changes made to your domain's DNS records (such as nameservers, A records, MX records, or CNAME records) to update across internet servers worldwide.
When DNS settings are changed, internet service providers (ISPs) and DNS servers need time to refresh their cached records and recognize the new information.
How Long Does DNS Propagation Take?
- Most DNS changes begin updating within a few hours.
- Full propagation typically takes 24 to 48 hours worldwide.
- In some cases, updates may appear sooner depending on your ISP and DNS provider.
Why Does Propagation Occur?
DNS servers store domain information in cache to improve browsing speed. When DNS records are updated, these cached records must expire before the new information becomes visible everywhere.
During DNS Propagation
- Some visitors may see the old website or server.
- Others may see the new website or server.
- Email delivery may temporarily be routed using old settings until propagation is complete.
Important Note
DNS propagation is a normal internet process and cannot be completely avoided. We recommend allowing up to 48 hours for all DNS changes to take effect globally.
