What is an A Record?

An A (Address) Record is a DNS record that connects a domain name to an IPv4 address.

When someone visits your website, the A record tells the internet which server hosts your website and where visitors should be directed.

Example

Domain Name IP Address
yourdomain.com 192.168.1.1

In this example, anyone visiting yourdomain.com will be directed to the server with the IP address 192.168.1.1.

Why is an A Record Important?

  • Connects your domain to a web hosting server.
  • Allows visitors to access your website using a domain name instead of an IP address.
  • Essential for making a website accessible on the internet.

Common Uses

  • Pointing a domain to a web hosting account.
  • Directing subdomains (e.g., blog.yourdomain.com) to specific servers.
  • Configuring custom services that require a dedicated IP address.

Important Note

Whenever you change an A record, DNS propagation may take some time to update worldwide. During this period, some visitors may still reach the previous server.
